Hasenhüttl: Final day draw "not enough"

Ralph Hasenhüttl admitted Southampton’s final day draw with Huddersfield Town at St Mary’s was symbolic of the season as a whole.

Saints were targeting victory to end the campaign on a high, and took a deserved first-half lead when Nathan Redmond curled home his ninth goal of the season in spectacular style.

But a lapse from goalkeeper Angus Gunn allowed Alex Pritchard to equalise after the interval, earning the relegated Terriers a point as Saints allowed another lead to slip away.

“It was not successful, because normally we must take the three points,” Hasenhüttl said of the game.

“They had no chances and scored once, but we had a lot of chances and scored once.

“A big mistake was the reason for the equaliser and so finally it’s a little bit like the picture for the whole year – it’s not enough.

“We are very often in the lead and we’ve given a lot of good positions away.

“We must change that next year, which means to have a good pre-season, to change a few parts of our team and our squad, and everything in the club.

“I think if we do this, it can look different next season. I hope it will.”

The manager reserved praise for Saints’ Player of the Year Redmond, whose stunning strike took his tally to a career best in club football, with all nine goals scored after Hasenhüttl’s December arrival.

“Even if he doesn’t play his best game, he is always dangerous,” the boss added. “Today it was a fantastic goal, but he had a lot of other chances.

“He’s had a fantastic second half of the season and he deserved to score very often because he invested a lot.”
